ZeroWaste Textile Art
My artwork has developed from my love of hand embroidery and using the scraps and waste from my interiors work. I am fascinated by traditional methods, such as stump and crewel work, with the addition of free motion machine stitching.
I love to work from both my own source material, photos and drawings, and on personal commissions.
All the backgrounds are made from found linens and silks from my own deadstock.

Canal side
I have used scraps and thread with water soluble fabric to create the houses, then used free motion stitching to add definition for the windows and roofs. The trees are made individually, and the water is embellished pieces of wool made directly onto the linen background.
Flower Garden
I wanted to leave a lot of open areas to create a more lace-like effect with the water soluble fabric, and have embedded some scraps of an Indian wall hanging to create the small jewel flowers, and then used the free motion stitching to define the petals and leaves. It is stitched to some shot silk.
The Iris
This is a commission piece that I made for an artist from one of his paintings, which he wanted to create a fabric version of in the round, 50cm.
I have used a lot of different fabrics, all applied by hand, and combined traditional hand stitching techniques and 3D elements using wool for the stuffings. I have then added detail and definition with free motion stitching. It is framed with a heavy linen.
Roses
I have made a base using free motion stitching and then hand embroidered detail onto them, including some 3D areas using fabric scraps and wool for padding. The thorns are hand stitched directly onto the linen.
The Oldest Terraces
These are a set of terraced houses near me which are the oldest in London. I have used scraps and thread in water soluble fabric quite densely to create the houses, and again the free motion stitching to define the windows and roofs and the lamppost. Mounted on linen.
A Walk in the Park
This is a piece that I made from one of my photos of a beautiful Crocosmia in full bloom! The base of the flower and leaf background is made from scraps and threads in water soluble fabric, and I have then applied hand stitching and fabric to create the flowers, including 3D elements using wool stuffing.
The leaves at the front are individually made needlework slips, which I have then stitched into the piece. They are created with wire, which adds another 3D element. Mounted onto a linen background.
